A huge yes for La La Land!

Published on 22 January 2017

There were dozens of preview screenings for the release of La La Land, and the one we got to attend was on the late side, since the film comes out on Wednesday. So it's been pretty hard to escape the glowing comments and reviews about the movie for weeks. Which naturally makes you think you're going to be disappointed, that it won't live up to the hype, that it's a real musical and therefore you're almost certainly going to be bored.

Well, no. Not only are you never bored for a single second, but the film is an absolute success from A to Z. Above all, it's incredibly beautiful. The sets, the costumes, the effects, the whole atmosphere are gorgeous, and from start to finish you're looking at a sublime painting.

The story has only limited interest, yet it's surprising in some respects I won't spoil. Damien Chazelle, who directed the film, managed to turn a banal love story into a totally gripping and, in its treatment, improbable tale.

The songs are beautiful (that soundtrack, my God…), the dancing is brilliant, and the two leads, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, are to die for. No, really, not a single weak spot in this film, which just devours you.

Few critics fail to consider this film a classic right out of the gate. And yes, clearly, La La Land is already a classic, and as long as you like a bit of jazz, you're going to get an earful and an eyeful.

Out in France on January 25th. Don't miss it!
