BeReal, the fun and spontaneous mini social network

Published on 12 May 2021

It happens fairly often that an app or a social network comes out, flops, and a few months after its release enjoys a notable resurgence of interest, just like that, out of nowhere, poof, without anyone really understanding why.

The social network and the app BeReal is going through a bit of that fate. Created by former students of the 42 school, the idea is to offer a dead-simple network around so-called "spontaneous" photos. We're going to try to sum up the concept in a few words. Pay attention, it's simple and precise.

Every day, at a given time, everyone receives a notification; at that moment you have two minutes to take a photo of what you're doing! A double photo actually, since you take both a selfie and a photo of what's in front of you. You publish it, and at that moment, you can also see your friends'!

So it's simple, effective, playful, and above all it allows for real spontaneity, far from our habits on Instagram for example.

By default your photos are private with your friends, but you can also share them on a slightly more general, public feed, in the style of the "for you" feed on TikTok.

To download it on iPhone it's over here, and on Android it's over there!

If you have other questions, BeReal has set up a fairly complete FAQ over here:
